This April will see the beginning of the MCU’s fourth phase as well as the possible final battle of the core Avengers team consisting of Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Hulk and Hawkeye. While I have no idea what Endgame will be about outside of the Avengers trying to deal with the aftermath of Thanos’ snap to end all snaps. During last nights Superbowl, we were treated to a TV spot for the twenty second film in the MCU library. There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s get started.
Before the trailer even begins we are shown the many casualties of Avengers Infinity War. Several heroes are shown to us that were dusted by the end of the third Avengers movie and the Ant-Man sequel. The images shown are given a coat of black and white paint with some nice red hues thrown in to better illustrate who we lost in the previous Avengers outing…as if there were any way we could’ve forgotten.
While there are several shots of empty streets and landmarks, this image of no one visiting the Statue of Liberty is actually kind of haunting. Imagine for a moment if literally half of all life on Earth just went away. What would your street look like? These brief shots of an empty NYC are all you need to see to have the stakes established for you.
Further emphasizing the possible themes of loss and loneliness are this image of a poster asking us what we are supposed to do now. This poster hanging in a a sterile support group for those dealing with being lower now than most have ever been is something that really reminds me of many, many AA and Veterans Support meetings I’ve seen and been to.
Obviously, Cap is not dealing with this well, or at least he’s barely holding himself together. How much more loss can he endure?
While the last trailer made us think that Tony Stark and Nebula were hopelessly marooned in space, here we see that they are not taking there desolation laying down. This shot is a great contrast to Cap’s depression.
Next we see most of the surviving Avengers assembled at their upstate New York headquarters. What exactly has brought them outside is unknown for now, but I think we may be able to safely assume that it has something to do with the sudden appearance of Scott Lang. An appearance we got to see at the end of the last trailer.
The inclusion f Rocket to the Avengers team is something I’m very much looking forward to. He’s probably crapping his pants at the fact that Earth still doesn’t have a Space Force. Plus, I’m not even going to pretend to know what he’s doing in this shot, but those look to be some nice lobster traps behind him. Perhaps he’s asking Aquaman for some help.
Next we see Black Widow enjoying some recreational target practice. It should be noted that her hair is much longer than it was in the previous shot. While I don’t really care for fan theories or plot speculation before the movie is released, I think that there must be a large amount of time elapsing between this shot and the previous on of her with the team outside of the Avengers HQ.
While Ant-Man’s role in the film will no doubt be significant, I’m still wondering how he was able to escape the quantum realm at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp. He’ll no doubt give the team some type of fighting chance in trying to undo the snap of the last film. Plus, it’s great seeing War Machine get something to do in these films outside of covering fire.
Here we can see Thor walking through a entryway while carrying his weaponized plot device possibly seeking out Thanos. While no one outside of the people making these films knows where Thor is here, it kind of looks like Thanos’ farm from the previous Avengers film. Although it could also be where he hopes to establish a new plot for Asgard. Like I said, no one knows right now.
Clint Barton makes his return to the Avengers and he has the prettiest hair in all the land. Seriously though, his cut is on point. I will say that I am a little worried for his safety here as he is seen looking into a red light of some kind. This may be a coincidence, but all of the dusted characters from the last film were shown with a similar color scheme at the beginning of this trailer. Could he be the next Avenger to bite the dust? Hawkeye just gets no love. It’s unfair really.
Cap has his shield back! While I want to be overjoyed here as it may imply that Tony Stark may have given Cap the shield along with his apologies for not thinking rationally during the third Cap film, but I can’t help but notice that Cap’s hands a bloody and very, very shaky as he tightens the straps to his trademarked shield. Could the first Avenger be making his last stand?
The Avengers seem to be making the longest walk to what may possibly be their last mission to undo what Thanos has done. Upon closer inspection, you can make out Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Rocket, Ant-Man, War Machine and possibly Bruce Banner taking up the rear. While this may be their last stand, what I love about this final shot is the fact that despite certain defeat, the Avengers are willing to stand and fight, just like heroes are supposed to.
And that’s the trailer. While Iwas surprised that there wasn’t a hint of Captain Marvel in this forty second spot, I’m certainly not disappointed. This film seems very, very different from the previous Avengers films. This film seems to let the viewer know that we are in for a different kind of MCU film. One that dives head first into the repercussions of past defeats.
Avengers Endgame will be released on April 26th, 2019.
