There has been a lot of fervor online about a report from the daily mail that discusses the massive changes that are heading for James Bond and the 007 franchise. It’s no longer news at this point thanks to the internet throwing a fit, but actress Lashana Lynch will be given the title of “007”.
Actress and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge was brought on, seemingly late in production, to tweak the script and bring in new story elements. And one of those new elements was a female agent that (of course) catches Bond’s eye. While this may sound like an average day in the life of Bond, to his surprise, the new double “O” is not having any of it.
While many people online are just hearing that there is a new female and black Bond, many people are ignoring this quote from Waller-Bridge:
“There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not [the Bond franchise] is relevant now because of who he is and the way he treats women. I think that’s bollocks. I think he’s absolutely relevant now. It has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to this character.”
So I’ll be honest, the casting and inclusion of actress Lashana Lynch is a stunt. A stunt designed to generate conversation that doubles as free advertisement for a film that’s been wrought with production troubles. While diversity and inclusion is being forced upon the audience, I think it’s important to know that a beloved character isn’t being changed, the world around him is changing and he is reacting to it.
