James Gunn is back!

Deadline has reported today that director and writer James Gunn will return to the directors chair of Guardians of the Galaxy 3…after he has directed Suicide Squad 2 for DC Films and Warner Bros..

Last year, just weeks after the theatrical release of Avengers Infinity War, Disney and Marvel Studios had parted ways with Gunn after a series of tweets had resurfaced displaying some very crude and plain dumb humor about rape and pedophilia. James had apologized several times in the years since, but also never tried to hide the fact that he once said some stupid shit.

Back in July, when his separation from Disney took place, he said: “My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.”

In response to James Gunn’s firing, things over at Marvel Studios have been a bit fractious regarding the subject of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The entire cast rallied to support their friend and director, Taika Waititi refused to entertain the idea that he could direct the third entry in the Guardians series, and Dave Bautista kind of went on a warpath against Disney, threatening to quit the third film.

Announcing his return on Twitter, James Gunn had this to say;

It’ll be great to see him coming back to the franchise that he help find it’s identity (along with writer Nicole Perlman), as it because a very personal series of films for him and brought an amazing spotlight on some of the most obscure characters to be found in all of Marvel Comics.
